I work across an array of mediums, including painting, drawing, photography/photo-collage, and video. While a clearly distinctive “look” is elusive among my varied output, all my work is united by a few key obsessions/concerns, including: the relentless incursion of the processed/mediated world into every niche of society and the individual (encompassing the cellular and psychological levels, among others); the collision of the familiar and the alien (especially in ways that seem haphazard, but are in fact highly orchestrated); and the infinite contortions of the human form (by turns beautiful and unsettling).

Much of my work consists of one-line pen drawings—that is, drawings composed with a single continuous stroke—that depict simple narratives of people engaged in some type of struggle. The power and immediacy of these stories and characters comes from the stripped down approach (which on further examination isn’t necessarily that simple). Creating vivid imagery without ever crossing a line requires a certain rigor and a deeper appreciation of what the line is and means—as both an artistic element and an essential element in the world, integral to all movement and space.

I received a BA in art education, and subsequently earned an MA in painting and drawing, as well as an MFA in those same disciplines.  My training and practice as an artist have given me the tools to better understand culture, society, and the artifacts they spawn; to see in a clearer way the context of mundane existence and in turn fashion the products of “everyday” life into something that, ideally, can transcend the mundane; and maybe—in my best work at least—galvanize others to also see more clearly and to realize that the normal stream of existence is neither normal nor anything like a sequential stream…and maybe not even existence as it was once understood.
